Research areas

The scientific work carried out by our group focuses on several lines:

 

Therapeutic alternatives in infections by multiresistant bacteria.

Through this line, projects for the evaluation of new antimicrobial treatments caused by bacteria with different mechanisms of resistance, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, are carried out with different experimental models of infections, such as such as pneumonia, meningitis, peritoneal sepsis, foreign body and endocarditis, in which in vitro studies, pharmacokinetic / pharmacodynamic studies and efficacy in vivo studies are carried out, to evaluated different parameters.

Within this line, antimicrobials commonly used in human clinical are studied, to evaluate their activity on bacteria with prevalent resistance mechanisms, or their use in combination to other antimicrobial. Moreover, new molecules with antimicrobial activity are evaluated in a preclinical development phase. Different projects in this line are carried out as coordinated studies with other Spanish research groups, mostly from the Spanish Research Network in Infectious Pathology (REIPI, Instituto de Salud Carlos III).

 

Infections in immunosuppressed patients.

Infection studies are carried out in: i) recipients of solid organ transplants; ii) hematopoietic progenitors and iii) in cancer patients, using clinical epidemiology methods, on the incidence and risk factors, etiology, and clinical characteristics and prognosis in these groups of patients, as well as febrile neutropenia syndrome after chemotherapy.

The infections under study are bacteremia, pneumonia, infection of the surgical wound and urinary infection. Also infections by specific microorganisms such as cytomegalovirus, Aspergillus spp. and ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. In this line, studies are carried out on specific aspects of fungal infections such as the empirical antifungal treatment in selected patients with neutropenia and persistent fever.

Infections in transplants and onco-hematological patients.

Viral infections such as viral respiratory infections are a cause of morbidity and mortality in immunosuppressed patients. In this line, studies are being carried out on the relationship between the specific immunity against viruses and the evolution of infection / disease caused by these viruses. In the studies of the disease caused by viruses after transplantation, we optimize molecular techniques for the detection of herpes virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus and respiratory syncytial virus, as well as other emerging or recently diagnosed viruses, of which it is not yet well known its epidemiology and prognosis.

Endovascular infections

Through this line, projects are carried out on epidemiological factors (nosocomial endocarditis, incidence in the elderly, evolution over time, etc.) in infectious endocarditis, relevant clinical aspects (development of ventricular failure, neurological disorders, etc.). ), microbiological aspects (Staphylococcus, Enterococcus faecalis, Coxiella burnetii) and the therapeutic management in its medical and surgical aspects.

We also investigate infections in cardiac electrical stimulation devices. Different projects in this line are carried out as studies with other Spanish research groups, mostly from the Spanish Research Network in Infectious Pathology (REIPI, Instituto de Salud Carlos III).
